SHIELD DEFENSE Extension Privacy Policy

Effective Date: May 25, 2017

I. Introduction

The SHIELD DEFENSE extension is owned by GreenSearchSecurity, which is located at 1010 De La Gauchetière Ouest #1230. The Company as the responsible body under the Canada federal data protection law takes the protection of your personal data very seriously and will always offer you the SHIELD DEFENSE and its functionality with your privacy in mind.

We share the belief that privacy, when done right, is empowering, and that is why privacy is central to the SHIELD DEFENSE and new functionality that we may add. Therefore we only collect data to build our products for the benefits of our users and we believe that we as a company should never have any personal data about our users unless they affirmatively provide it to us.

The core functionality of the SHIELD DEFENSE is to inform users what companies are tracking (“Trackers”) them on any given website so individuals can exercise personal control over that activity by blocking Trackers.

II. Basis to Collect and Use Personal Data

There is no obligation on your part to provide your Personal Data. However, if you do, we have a legitimate interest to collect and use it, namely so we can provide products or services, or complete a transaction with you.

III. Notion of Personal Data

Personal Data means any information concerning the personal or material circumstances of an identified or identifiable individual such as name and age. Non-personal data are all data that cannot be used to identify an individual, such as statistics about usage of a website.

IV. What Personal Data are collected

IP-Address: We do not differentiate between static or dynamic IP addresses – that is driven at the user level – but please see the Security section below to learn more about the security measures we take to protect data – including your IP-address – which SHIELD DEFENSE collects.

The use of the SHIELD DEFENSE Personal Data that we collect: (i) IP-addresses are solemnly collected for geolocation purposes and analytic purposes only. We never store visited web sites addresses.

VI. Participation on the Opt-In Community

What Data is Collected – In order to continue offering the SHIELD DEFENSE for free, you are asked at the point of download, if you will opt-in to a data exchange relationship with us, as other of SHIELD DEFENSE users have already agreed to do, giving us permission to monitor and catalogue data on the Trackers that may be following you as you traverse the Internet. There is no obligation to opt-in to this community, and if you do you can always withdraw your consent as described below. To be clear, the list of things we collect is not about you. It’s about those Trackers we mentioned in the Introduction. We don’t associate any Trackers with you or your devices. The only way we will collect this Tracker data is if you affirmatively opt-in, and when you do so, the data we collect is limited to the following:

  • The Trackers identified by the SHIELD DEFENSE
  • The blocking status of the Trackers
  • Domains identified as serving Trackers
  • The browser in which the SHIELD DEFENSE has been installed
  • The browser language
  • Standard web server log information like your web request
  • Whether Trackers appeared on any visited webpage

Why the Tracker Data is Important and How it's Used: We incur significant costs in order for you to enjoy this free and valuable privacy tool, but we believe that a data exchange relationship–where you give us permission to use Tracker data and we give you a free privacy tool–is a fair way to do business. We derive value from the Tracker data by licensing it back to the SHIELD DEFENSE’s prior owner, who will use it, as it has done so before. We may also use this Tracker data to build or improve our other consumer privacy products. This data is not shared with any other third party. This data is not used for the purpose of tracking individuals or to target individuals in order to serve advertisements to them.
